Omohan Ebhodaghe is the first Nigerian to write the great Nigerian novel. In terms of sheer size and quality, IN THE MIDST OF LOAFERS is to WAR AND PEACE by Leo Tolstoy what his forthcoming PHOTOCOPIES & ORIGINAL is to ANNA KARENINA also by Leo Tolstoy of Russia. A former teacher of English and literature, Omohan Ebhodaghe, BA, PGDE, was the 1976 second runner-up in a National Celebration Day poetry competition at Iguobazuwa, Edo state, Nigeria. He was the 1993-4 publicity secretary of the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Lagos state chapter and a current member of the Society of Authors, London, UK. Asked about how he came about writing his poetry book and two big novels, he was said to have replied: At the age of five I was gripped with a strange illness while on the laps of my late father. At that Nasamu street, Apapa Ajegunle, Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA of Lagos, Nigeria, residence, I saw planet earth as a globe or ball rolling towards me and I was frightened to death that the world would crush me. I was, however, anointed around the month of August 1985 during my one year national youth service corp or NYSC days. The physically felt spiritual anointing was carried out at the early hours of morning on my bed at Umuoma village of Ihiala local government area of Anambra state of Nigeria by the big hands of God almighty that departed from me through my closed window. I was thus commissioned to complete the poetry book that I was writing in the English tradition but that I turned to the Esan tradition and write the two giant novels as masterpieces. But I was too busy doing other things to survive day-to-day life; and, it was not until I got to York Way in North London, UK, as the ideal home of constitutional monarchy, and after I have wasted some four additional years in mental health hospital wards that was caused by my lack of money, friends, housing and other means of working that I seriously began to reconsider the rough manuscript as drafts that I brought from Nigeria and write the final copies of the first great Nigerian novels in 2002 and 2003.
